TAMBOPATA NATIONAL RESERVE

Lago Sandoval is a magnificent rainforest oxbow lake located 35 minutes downriver from Puerto Maldonado in south-eastern Peruvian Amazon in Madre de Dios. Lake Sandoval attracts many visitors delighted with the natural beauty and the great opportunities to see lots wildlife in the area. Lago Sandoval is certainly a must-see site for anyone visiting the Tambopata National Reserve. It is very accessible due to the proximity to Cuzco airport (40 minutes flight) and (1h and 20 minutes from Lima’s international airport)

The oxbow-lake is considered a super biodiversity hotspot and is also part of the Tambopata National Reserve promoting the conservation of the whole area. It protects very fragile ecosystems and contains unique endemic species.

Nature hike to reach the lake. The walk to discover the species living in the floodplain and wetland is beautiful (3K jungle walk)

Follow a local guide through the quiet palm-wamp forest in a traditional wooden canoe.

The lake is home to many wild animals and plants, including some highly endangered ones such as the giant river otters, black caimans, anacondas, tapirs, paiche fish and many threatened species.

The beautiful landscape on the lake and wetlands is the best for pictures.

Lago Sandoval is undoubtedly the most visited attraction in the region. You can the lake reach easily from the city of Puerto Maldonado. There are many travel agencies just near the plaza de armas. It might take a while for you to look around to pick the best offer.

Rates may vary depending on the number of people per group and departure times. Most agencies start at 9:00 am. Though we highly recommend to go earlier to better enjoy the experience at the lake. The wild animals are very active in the morning after sunrise.
