On Day 1 of the 3-day Amazon tours in Peru, you will be picked up from Puerto Maldonado airport and taken to Hacienda Tambopata Lodge. The lodge is located by the Tambopata River and offers a peaceful setting. After settling in, you can relax and enjoy the natural sounds of birds and leaves. In the afternoon, there will be a guided hike through the forest trails. You will learn about medicinal plants and have the chance to see wildlife at a mammal salt lick. In the evening, there will be a night walk to see nocturnal creatures like monkeys, insects, lizards, spiders, frogs, and snakes. Afterward, you can have dinner under the stars and rest in your room by the Tambopata Reserve. This is just the beginning of your adventure!

Afterwards, continue exploring by boat and get close to capybaras and white caimans along the river shores. Then, return to the lodge for lunch. In the second part of today’s expedition, head towards Lake Sandoval by navigating the Madre de Dios River and hiking through lush jungle. Expert locals will guide you and point out different animals like capuchin monkeys, tamarin squirrels, and red howler monkeys. Finally, paddle canoes through palm swamps until the lake appears under the sunset colors. You may see turtles, black caimans, and giant river otters. Arrival and Exploration

Your journey begins with a pickup from Puerto Maldonado airport, followed by a transfer to a lodge nestled on the banks of the scenic Tambopata River. After settling into your accommodation, take some time to relax and soak in the tranquility of your surroundings.

In the afternoon, your adventure kicks off with a guided hike through dense forest trails. Marvel at giant trees stretching towards the sky and learn about medicinal plants used by local communities for centuries. The highlight of this trek is reaching a mammal salt lick, a natural mineral deposit that attracts peccaries, deer, tapirs, and other mammals.

As dusk falls, embark on an intriguing night walk armed with flashlights. What to Bring on Your 3-Day Amazon Tours in Peru?

Packing for the stay:

  • You can bring a suitcase and repack the essentials into a backpack for your two-night stay at the lodge. The rest can be left in our office until your return to Puerto Maldonado.

Appropriate clothing for hikes:

  • Wear suitable clothing, such as long pants and sleeves, for the hikes. Preferably, it should be lightweight and quick-drying.

Comfort at the lodge:

  • At the lodge, you can use sandals and more comfortable clothing.

Mosquito protection:

  • In case of mosquitoes, bring DEET repellent.

Preparation for the rain:

  • Carry a poncho or waterproof jacket in case of rain for boat trips. Remember, it can be a bit chilly and humid in the mornings.

Sunny days:

  • For sunny days, don’t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, or a cap.
  • Also, bring swimwear and a bottle to fill up water from the containers at the lodge.

Hacienda Tambopata Lodge is powered by solar energy for most of the day, which is stored in lithium batteries, making it very convenient. Meanwhile, at Casa Sandoval Lodge within the Tambopata National Reserve, the energy supply is more limited and is only provided during meal times. Mostly, power is supplied during the evening from 6 to 9 pm to recharge electronic devices.
